More than eighty attorneys from Jones Day's Dallas office are participating in the Firm's New Teacher Initiative program, which supports Teach for America (TFA) teachers in the new Dallas expansion site.
Teach for America is a national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit to teach in urban and rural public schools for two years. Their mission is to enlist the nation's most promising future leaders in the effort to eliminate educational inequality.
Jones Day's New Teacher Initiative program supports this mission by pairing TFA teachers with Jones Day attorneys who will provide financial and social support within the Dallas community. The pairings were made based on factors such as home state, university, and interests.
The program kicked off in June, with a reception at Jones Day. During the reception, Jones Day attorneys and TFA alumni John Chase and Jodie Michalski shared their teaching experiences and their hopes for the New Teacher Initiative program.
"These young teachers are new to the school district, the classroom, and the Dallas community," Michalski said. "As alumni of TFA, we understand the challenges they face, and we are eager to help them to have the best possible teaching experience here in Dallas."
The attorneys also presented gift cards to the teachers, which will help the teachers buy classroom supplies.
"As a new supporter of TFA, I am thrilled to see them expand to Dallas. We're excited about the New Teacher Initiative program and we are committed to helping make the experience the best it can be for these teachers, and the DISD students they will teach," said George Manning, the partner-in-charge of Jones Day's Dallas office.
