Pro bono client obtains registration and enforcement of judgment of U.S. District Court in Australian Supreme Court of Victoria
Clients Roe, Sarah
The Melbourne office of Jones Day successfully acted in proceedings before the Supreme Court of Victoria to enforce a judgment of the U.S. District Court on behalf of Jones Day pro-bono client, Sarah Roe (a pseudonym). In 2017, the U.S. District Court awarded Ms. Roe compensatory and punitive damages after finding that the defendant, a former Australian resident, had violated statutory prohibitions on forced labour, forced labour trafficking and commercial sex trafficking. Jones Day obtained orders for the recognition and registration of the judgment of the U.S. District Court in Victoria, enabling Ms. Roe to enforce the judgment in Australia. In 2021 those enforcement efforts culminated in the successful seizure and sale of real estate owned by the defendant in Melbourne, Australia.
