Student obtains previously denied special education services
Jones Day and Disability Rights Texas successfully mediated and settled a Special Education Due Process hearing complaint brought on behalf of a minor student against Huntsville Independent School District.
Jones Day and Disability Rights Texas asserted that Huntsville ISD had denied special education services to the student and disciplined the student at an alarmingly high rate. The student was ultimately expelled after an incident in which school resource officers restrained and pepper sprayed the student. Following expulsion, the student was provided reduced hours of educational services each week.
Jones Day and Disability Rights Texas successfully obtained reversal of the student's expulsion, initiation of special education services, compensatory special education services, training for school staff on the appropriate use of school resource officers, and implicit and racial bias training for school staff and school resource officers.
