Paul PCS defeats union's first ever organizing campaign at charter school in District of Columbia
Clients Paul Public Charter School
Jones Day successfully represented Paul Public Charter School in the first union campaign waged by the American Federation of Teachers in the District of Columbia. In February 2017, AFT supporters presented the school CEO with a petition signed by over 75 percent of the potential bargaining unit, demanding voluntary recognition of the union. The union filed a petition for election with the NLRB several weeks later. Jones Day provided advice to the school management team on union campaign strategy, trained management on the rules of engagement during union organizing efforts, and advised the school in crafting campaign correspondence, speeches and presentations. One day before the scheduled election, AFT withdrew its petition based on concerns that the union would lose the election. AFT also withdrew an unfair labor practice claim it had filed against Paul Charter during the campaign.
