Jones Day secures asylum for Iraqi refugee
Jones Day's New York office (Anja Havedal-Ipp) successfully represented an Iraqi refugee in affirmative asylum proceedings, resulting in a grant of asylum. The client, a young Shiite man, was kidnapped and tortured by Sunni extremists. After the client came to the United States as a student, his family received a threat letter warning him not to return to Iraq. After interviewing the client, the asylum officer issued a Notice of Intent to Deny the asylum application. Jones Day promptly filed a rebuttal letter, and, on the strength of this rebuttal, the asylum office changed course, recommending approval of the client's application. The client subsequently received final approval, and may now live and work permanently in the U.S. and eventually apply for citizenship.
