DC Nonprofit sends at-risk youths to Northern Ireland

Clients Belfast-Beltway Boxing Project

John Welch and Patrick Browne, Jones Day Washington, provided legal support to a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation, the Belfast-Beltway Boxing Project, as it organized a cross-community cultural exchange and international athletic competition between at-risk youths in the Washington, D.C. area and in Northern Ireland. The five-day excursion in January 2012 was part of a larger educational program designed to encourage American children to cultivate relationships with their counterparts — both Catholics and Protestants — living in downtrodden sections of Northern Ireland. The trip marked the participants’ first opportunity to travel abroad and it included visits to Stormont, the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Northern Ireland Executive, Belfast City Hall, the United States Consulate in Belfast, the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, and the Ardoyne Holy Cross Boxing Club, among others. Later this year, the children from Northern Ireland will embark on a similar trip to Washington, D.C.
