Government of Sierra Leone negotiates mining contracts

Clients Government of Sierra Leone

Since May 2008, Jones Day attorneys have been assisting the Government of Sierra Leone in reviewing the country's most important mining concession and in the negotiation of new mining contracts. We continue to assist the Government in negotiating terms that are consistent with international practice in mining contracts, as well as developing mining law and policy. The resulting contracts deliver immediate benefits to one of the world's poorest nations. The mining companies that do business in Sierra Leone make significant tax and royalty payments to the Government, and the contracts also ensure that the companies make contributions to local communities, hire Sierra Leonean employees, provide for medical care and education and rehabilitate the environment. The project requires numerous visits to Sierra Leone and other African nations and gives attorneys the opportunity to interact directly with senior Government officials, as well as local community leaders.
