Vickery Meadow Learning Center secures contested property tax exemption

Clients Vickery Meadow Learning Center

During February 2011 Jones Day obtained a "victory" for Vickery Meadow Learning Center (VMLC) in a contested Texas local property tax hearing. VMLC provides free classes and educational programs for adults and young children in Dallas, Texas, aimed at improving English literacy. VMLC's application for a property tax exemption was denied by the Dallas Central Appraisal District, leading to a contested hearing before the local appraisal review board.

Jones Day offered our assistance to VMLC in securing the exemption at hearing and beyond, only to learn that (in effect) a default judgment was imminent. We explored possible procedural remedies, obtained a continuance and reinstatement of the hearing, identified a more applicable reason for exemption, gathered (including a trip to the VMLC campus for pictures and video) and submitted somewhat extensive evidentiary support, and debated the merits with opposing counsel for the tax authority. VMLC subsequently received a statement granting the exemption in full, for both prior and future years, without having to try the matter before the local appraisal review board.

After receiving the exemption letter VMLC Executive Director Sarah Polley notified Jones Day of the approval, emailing: "Yippee!!! What a relief. I am so thankful for all of you!"
