Waterloo Legal Advice Service takes advantage of new legislation for client

Clients Waterloo Legal Advice Service

Jones Day London acted through our affiliated advice center, Waterloo Legal Advice Service, for an individual claiming the return of nearly £8,000 lent to the client's former partner. In the course of winning this claim and defeating a counterclaim, Victoria and the instructed barrister obtained a cost order. Following changes to UK law in 2007, cost orders are issued in pro bono cases with the payment being made to the Access to Justice Foundation, which passes the payment to charities that fund access to justice. Victoria framed the costs in terms of usual fees for the lawyers involved, resulting in a cost order for £2,886.75. This is very new legislation and such orders are still very rare. It was also the first cost order ever issued in relation to a Waterloo client.
