The Médicins Sans Frontières ("MSF") Orienteering Competition 2010 was successfully held on Sunday, January 17, 2010, and Jones Day Hong Kong is proud to have supported the event by both volunteering and participating. In support of the MSF and the competition, the Hong Kong office sent a team of eight volunteers to assist in the logistics of the day-long event. Three of the trainee solicitors, also formed a team to participate in the competition and competed against 2,400 other participants under the generous sponsorship of our colleagues and friends. Participants were required to navigate, using map and compass only, an area which is usually unfamiliar to them and located in difficult terrain. The quicker the teams reached the checkpoints, the more points were accumulated.
MSF is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people in more than 70 countries who are affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters and exclusion from health care. Apart from fundraising, the annually-held competition gives participants a glimpse of the hardships faced by victims of disasters such as walking for days to reach a MSF clinic, as well as the challenges faced by MSF and its volunteers during relief operations such as traveling through inhospitable terrain to reach isolated populations in remote areas. It has become the largest orienteering competition in Hong Kong since its inception in 2002.
In addition, the Hong Kong office has been acting as the company secretary and provides general advice as to Hong Kong law to Médicins Sans Frontières (HK) Limited, the Hong Kong office of MSF.
