Mexican client wins U.S. asylum

Clients Mexican applicant for asylum

Jones Day represented an indigent immigrant's appeal from a final order of removal. While the appeal was pending, new evidence was discovered indicating that our client could - with the favorable exercise of Government discretion-eventually become a lawful permanent resident. Jones Day attorneys initiated mediation in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and successfully negotiated with the Department of Justice to have the immigration proceedings reopened. Upon remand to the immigration court, Jones Day attorneys convinced the Department of Homeland Security to administratively close the removal proceedings and to release our client, who had been in detention for approximately 18 months, without bond.
