LAUSD wins new trial after jury verdict on teacher's sexual harassment action

Clients Los Angeles Unified School District

The Los Angeles Unified School District ("LAUSD") retained Jones Day after a jury awarded a multimillion dollar verdict against the District on a sexual harassment case based on sexual harassment by students towards a teacher. We obtained a new trial on post trial motions which was affirmed on appeal and subsequently affirmed after review by the California Supreme Court. We also argued matter in the Supreme Court in connection with Carter v. Department of Veteran Affairs, as amicus for the District in support of the Department on the issue of the retroactive effect of employers' responsibility for third party harassment of employees under Govt. Code Section 12940, subd. (j)(1).
