Community Health Systems, Inc. wins summary judgment in qui tam lawsuit brought by former hospital compliance officer pursuant to federal False Claims Act

Jones Day obtained an order on July 1, 2009 granting summary judgment in connection with its joint representation of Community Health Systems, Inc., Quorum Health Resources, LLC and Quroum Health Group, Inc. The lawsuit, filed in November 2002 pursuant to the qui tam provisions of the federal False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C. §§ 3729, et seq., sought damages and penalties in the amount of $70 million in connection with claims submitted to Medicare and Medicaid. The district court ordered the relator, a former compliance officer at a Southeast Georgia hospital, to reimburse Community Health Systems and the other defendants for costs and attorneys' fees.
