Grandmother obtains custody of her two-year old granddaughter
Clients Client G
Alexandria Mihalcik, Nancy Berardinelli-Krantz, and Adrian Wager-Zito of Jones Day Washington successfully represented a grandmother (Mrs. G) in obtaining legal and physical custody of her two-year-old grandchild (Child A) in D.C. Superior Court before Judge Juliet McKenna. Mrs. G had been taking care of Child A for various periods of time since Child A's birth at the request of the birth mother, who was unable to care for her child. Alexandria, Nancy, and Adrian were able to obtain consents to custody from the birth mother and father and successfully arranged for both birth parents to attend the evidentiary hearing in support of custody for Mrs. G. Following the evidentiary hearing, Judge McKenna determined that it would be in the best interest and welfare of Child A if Mrs. G were awarded sole legal and physical custody of Child A with reasonable rights of visitation granted to the parents. This case was taken by Jones Day on referral from the Children's Law Center in Washington, D.C. whose mission is to provide legal services to at-risk children and their families.
