Antonio Canales and Mercedes Fernández recognized on The Legal 500 Arbitration Powerlist: Iberia 2023

Mercedes Fernández and Antonio Canales, both partners in the Firm's Madrid Office and members of the Global Disputes Practice, were recognized in The Legal 500 Arbitration Powerlist: Iberia 2023. The publication is designed to highlight the region's leading arbitration counsel to Legal 500's broad international readership of private practice lawyers, in-house counsel, and expert witnesses.

Ms. Fernández leads the Global Disputes team in Madrid and focuses her practice in the area of civil and commercial jurisdiction, both in arbitral and judicial proceedings. She is very active in investment arbitration, and her litigation experience is centered on disputes involving construction contracts and large civil engineering projects, construction defects, energy projects, banking and financial disputes, directors' liability, commercial litigation, and conflicts arising from M&A transactions. Ms. Fernández has participated in proceedings before Spanish courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court, and has acted as counsel in national and international arbitration proceedings. Among the latter, Ms. Fernández has participated in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations. Her broad experience in arbitration includes proceedings governed by United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) rules, as well as investment arbitrations before the World Bank (ICSID). She also acts as an independent arbiter.

Mr. Canales represents clients on international and national civil and commercial arbitration proceedings before the principal arbitration institutions and on civil and commercial judicial proceedings before Spanish courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court. He assists in proceedings regarding contract disputes, damage claims, construction defects, private antitrust litigation, insolvency proceedings, corporate disputes (between shareholders, challenges to corporate resolutions, and directors' liability), agency and distribution agreements, banking-insurance issues, and claims relating to banking contracts and financial products. Mr. Canales is also active in administrative judicial proceedings (antitrust infringement proceedings, liability of public administration, energy regulatory matters, and planning).
