Three Jones Day partners among Daily Journal's "Top 100 Lawyers in California"
Karen P. Hewitt, David C. Kiernan, and Christopher Lovrien have been named among the "2020 Top 100 Lawyers in California" by the Daily Journal, California’s legal-industry newspaper. This list recognizes lawyers in the Golden State performing cutting-edge legal work. Daily Journal editors reviewed hundreds of submissions to produce the 2020 "Top 100 Lawyers" list.
As Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s California Region, Ms. Hewitt leads a team of nearly 275 lawyers who represent major companies in California, nationally, and internationally on their most complex issues and disputes relating to intellectual property, corporate, litigation, and white collar matters. Ms. Hewitt is currently the only woman leading the statewide operations of any major law firm in California. Before joining Jones Day in 2010, she served with the U.S. Department of Justice for 18 years and served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California from 2007-2010. This is the eighth time Ms. Hewitt has been honored in "Top 100 Lawyers," having been named from 2012-2016 and 2018-2020. She was also named among the "Top Women Lawyers in California" by the Daily Journal from 2013-2019. Ms. Hewitt is the lead Jones Day partner serving as outside counsel for Walmart in the nationwide series of more than 2,000 civil cases arising from the current opioid crisis. She also is leading the defense of several major companies in pending confidential criminal and civil investigations brought by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Mr. Kiernan, who is the Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's Northern California Region, represents clients in high-stakes litigation, arbitrations, and government investigations, across industries with a particular focus on technology, energy, and health care. Clients also rely on him for counseling on antitrust and competition law issues, including interoperability, discounting, bundling, and pricing. Currently, Mr. Kiernan is lead counsel for Sutter Health in parallel class actions in state and federal court alleging tying and monopolization, lead counsel for a large refining company in class actions pending in state and federal courts alleging price fixing among eight refiners, lead counsel for a global consumer goods company in a public nuisance case alleging that nine companies are responsible for plastic pollution in waterways, and lead counsel for a railroad company challenging no-poach agreements.
Mr. Lovrien is a trial lawyer who represents corporate clients facing matters involving significant economic, regulatory, and reputational risk. This is the second time he has been recognized as a Top 100 lawyer by the Daily Journal . Mr. Lovrien is one of the lead trial lawyers defending Walmart in numerous civil cases concerning prescription opioids. He also is defending Fox and Fox News in a highly-publicized First Amendment lawsuit alleging that hosts and guests on Fox News programs described COVID-19 as a "hoax" and minimized the threat of the virus. Jones Day filed a motion to dismiss, demonstrating that the plaintiff had distorted the statements it challenged, while ignoring Fox News' reporting on the risks of the virus. The trial court dismissed the case with prejudice. The plaintiff has appealed. In addition to his client work, Mr. Lovrien is a member of Jones Day's Partnership Committee. He also serves on the Board of Advisors to the RAND Institute for Civil Justice.
