Managing Compliance Across Borders
Partner Sergio Alvarez-Mena and associate Marc Weinroth of Jones Day's Miami Office spoke at "Managing Compliance Across Borders," an executive-level program hosted by the University of Miami School of Law, on June 27, 2019.
Mr. Alvarez-Mena led a panel on cross-border regulatory and investigative challenges, which featured heads of regional SEC, EEOC, and DOJ AML task forces as well as the Brazilian Central Bank's corporate governance strategy. The panel explained that as Miami becomes more of an international financial center, extending beyond Latin America to Asian and European investors, regulators and authorities are closely minding their extraterritorial jurisdiction and are keen to assert it when necessary to protect the market's reliability and stability and investors' confidence in it.
Mr. Weinroth spoke on a panel examining compliance issues in the sports and entertainment industries, including recent trends impacting the collegiate sports landscape. The panel discussed the significant and immediate compliance risk posed by the legalization of sports gambling for universities and professional sports teams and leagues over the next few years, given the lack of uniformity across a patchwork of dozens of new state laws and regulations. The panel also discussed the potential threat posed by bettors seeking to compromise the integrity of games by bribing participants or making illicit payments to procure inside information.
