Jones Day names new leaders for Southeast Region and Atlanta Office
The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Lizanne Thomas has become Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's Southeast Region, overseeing offices in Atlanta and Miami. Al LaFiandra has been named Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Atlanta Office, and will oversee its day-to-day operations. Both appointments were effective January 1, 2019.
Ms. Thomas is one of the leading corporate governance lawyers in the country and along with her responsibilities in the Southeast Region, will remain head of Jones Day's corporate governance team. She participates in approximately 100 board meetings per year as counsel to a number of public companies. Ms. Thomas is experienced in shareholder activism, public and private mergers and acquisitions, takeover preparedness, and executive compensation. She represents special committees in control and conflict transactions, as well as in internal investigations, and is a regular speaker on corporate governance topics to leading business organizations, companies, and universities.
"Both Atlanta and Miami are recognized as vibrant, rapidly evolving centers of business and legal activity, and the influence of both cities continues to grow," said Ms. Thomas. "With our global presence, Jones Day is uniquely positioned to help businesses navigate the challenges facing multinational corporations. I look forward to working with our lawyers to connect our clients with Jones Day's capabilities around the world."
Mr. LaFiandra is a partner in Jones Day's Banking, Finance & Securities Practice and will continue to lead that practice in Atlanta. He has more than 25 years of experience in leveraged finance and business reorganizations. He represents lenders - primarily lead arrangers - in syndicated loans, as well as borrowers in various types of credit arrangements, and has significant experience in out-of-court workouts and debt restructurings of financially distressed loans. He is listed as a leading practitioner in many legal publications such as Georgia Trend magazine's "Legal Elite" and has received a "Band 1" ranking from Chambers USA (Banking & Finance - Georgia). He has written and lectured on numerous topics of interest to the financial community and formerly served as a director and president of the Turnaround Management Association (Atlanta chapter), and as a director of the Association of Certified Turnaround Practitioners ("ACTP").
"It is an exciting time for the Atlanta office," said Mr. LaFiandra. "This year marks our 30th year in Atlanta. In that time we, along with the broader Atlanta community, have benefited from the dynamic growth in our region. In many ways, the city's evolution over the last thirty years mirrors our own, as we have grown into a vibrant, full-service office consisting of almost 150 lawyers who, every day, provide complex legal services to clients, not just in Atlanta and the Southeast, but throughout the world."
In addition to the appointments of Ms. Thomas and Mr. LaFiandra, Walt Davis will become the Administrative Partner in Atlanta. Mr. Davis is a Partner in Jones Day's Securities Litigation and SEC Enforcement practice. He currently co-chairs the Securities and Corporate Litigation Subcommittee of the Atlanta Bar Association, and serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, the largest provider of pro bono legal services in Atlanta. In 2018, and again this year, he was recognized by Best Lawyers in America in Commercial Litigation and was previously selected by the Fulton County Daily Report for its list of "40 Legal Rising Stars to Watch" in Georgia.
