IBA-VIAC Consensual Dispute Resolution Competition (CDRC) Vienna
University of Vienna
In July 2018, at the fourth edition of the IBA-VIAC Consensual Dispute Resolution Competition Vienna, university teams from around the world met in the Austrian capital with professionals from law, academia, business, and government for five days of mock mediations, educational programs, and social events. More than 50 competition sessions were held, simulating legal negotiations with the support of a mediator. These sessions focused on the students’ ability to utilize the skills and strategies needed to negotiate or mediate settlements that best served the needs of the parties. The students were evaluated by skilled mediation and negotiation experts.
Jones Day partner Dr. Johannes P. Willheim delivered the keynote address, "The Future of Dispute Resolution Professionals," at the CDRC’s opening ceremony.
In this keynote, Johannes shared three predictions for the future of dispute professionals:
- The emergence of two types of dispute professionals: traditional (process) experts and dispute managers;
- A revolution in education and continued training; and
- The use of technology to complement, not replace, professionals.
