Jones Day adds insurance recovery lawyer Matthew Jacobs in Washington

The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Matthew Jacobs has joined the Firm’s Washington Office in its Insurance Recovery Practice.

Mr. Jacobs has been successfully litigating insurance coverage matters for more than 30 years. He handles complex, multi-party insurance coverage matters in state and federal courts throughout the country.

His numerous victories include a groundbreaking win in a significant pollution exclusion ruling relating to Chinese drywall, a ruling of first impression under Virginia law from a federal district court regarding the issue of exhaustion of underlying insurance limits, and recovering $15.5 million for a client following a two-day mediation over a large contingent business interruption claim related to the October 2011 Thai floods. He has also obtained tens of millions of dollars in defense costs, and indemnity, on behalf of clients who have been sued in large securities class actions.

"Matt will provide our clients with vital advice on insurance matters in courts all over the United States," said Kevyn Orr, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Washington Office. "His reputation within the insurance bar precedes him, and his representation on everything from cyber coverage to directors and officers policies is vital experience as we collaborate seamlessly across practices to deliver value to our clients."

Mr. Jacobs has served as a mediator in complex insurance disputes. While corporations seek Mr. Jacobs’ counsel on the availability of insurance coverage for a wide variety of claims, he also advises companies in the placement and renewal of various types of insurance coverage, including cyber insurance, directors and officers policies, and property insurance.

Added Ty Childress, who chairs the Firm’s Insurance Recovery Practice: "Matt’s addition to the Insurance Recovery Practice reflects Jones Day’s continuing commitment to being a leading advocate in protecting the insurance rights of corporate policyholders. Matt’s deep experience across the whole spectrum of insurance disputes provides a valuable additional resource for our clients and a great addition to our team."

Mr. Jacobs has been recognized by clients and peers in Chambers USA Client’s Guide for Insurance, the Legal Media Group’s Guide to the World’s Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers, and Washington’s Best Lawyers (Insurance) by Washingtonian magazine. In the 2018 edition of Chambers USA, commentators noted that he "is knowledgeable, detailed, forthright and well spoken," and as someone "[Who] takes initiative and gets things done." Mr. Jacobs has been a guest lecturer in the "Insurance Law and Policy" class at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and has co-chaired over a dozen conferences addressing various insurance topics over the past two decades.
