David Smith represents clients in complex litigation and government investigations involving high-value, cross-border issues. David's recent experience includes defending clients in criminal and civil fraud cases and government enforcement actions spanning three continents, handling international commercial contract disputes, and prevailing in federal courts on novel interpretations of federal anti-trafficking statutes.
David has served clients as lead counsel in more than a dozen cases in federal court and successfully briefed arguments in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
David also has an active pro bono practice, focusing on the Firm's efforts to combat human trafficking. He leads multiple teams representing women and children fleeing persecution in Latin America and seeking asylum in the United States.
Prior to joining Jones Day, David was an Attorney General Honors Attorney in the Washington, D.C. area, where he advised government agents in high-stakes national security investigations. David also lived in Asia for 12 years.
