Christopher Schmidt's practice focuses on data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, technology, and all related areas. He currently serves as an advisory board member of IAPP (International Association of Privacy Professionals) and holds a variety of internationally recognized privacy, data protection, and technology certifications (Fellow of Information Privacy [FIP]; Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe [CIPP/E]; Certified Information Privacy Manager [CIPM]; Certified Information Privacy Technologist [CIPT]; and Certified Data Protection Officer/France [CDPO/FR]).

Christopher focuses on cybersecurity and data protection matters, including privacy litigation and compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), European, and German data protection laws, drafting and negotiation of policies and contracts, incident response, M&A agreements, transfer safeguards and assessments, as well as all types of risk-based and technical documentation, auditing, and safeguarding.

Prior to joining Jones Day, Christopher worked at the International and European Affairs Department of the Hessian Data Protection Commissioner, which handles cooperation and consistency procedures in accordance with Chapter VII of the GDPR, acts as a contact point including for the European Data Protection Board, and oversees international data transfers and related safeguards (binding corporate rules and standard data protection clauses). Christopher also focused on matters related to employee data protection and automated human resources data processing and advised and monitored data protection officers from the public and the private sectors.

(Solmax), the global leader in the production of high-quality polyethylene geomembranes for industrial and environmental applications, and its shareholders (including institutional investors Caisse de dépot et placement du Québec and Fonds de Solidarité FTQ), in connection with Solmax’s acquisition of TenCate Geosynthetics Holding B.V., a global provider of geosynthetics and industrial fabrics, from Dutch conglomerate Koninklijke Ten Cate (Royal Ten Cate, the Netherlands), and advised on the related senior secured financing to support the acquisition.
