Raimundo Ortega handles complex antitrust and regulatory matters, with extensive experience in infrastructure and energy. He is the only lawyer in Spain ranked simultaneously in competition and energy by Chambers, Legal 500, and Best Lawyers for five consecutive years. Raimundo was recently appointed by the Spanish Competition Authority (CNMC) as a Non-Governmental Advisor to the International Competition Network.
Raimundo is advising on COVID-19 (coronavirus) implications as they relate to antitrust and regulatory measures being taken by the Spanish government in wake of the crisis, including agreements between competitors, foreign direct investment (FDI) screenings for the energy sector, and compliance with industrial measures as a result of the lockdown.
For more than 20 years, Raimundo has represented foreign and domestic funds, financial institutions, and infrastructure and energy companies such as Aberdeen, Axpo, Bombardier, CaixaBank, Cintra, EDF, Endesa, Engie, IBM, Macquarie, Marubeni, Naturgy, Orange, Prysmian, KPN, SES, and Total.
He is currently advising on several cartel investigations, including leniency applications and damage claims, before the CNMC and the Supreme Court. He also has extensive experience in merger regulation, including phase 2 transactions with remedies. He is also active in an energy regulatory matter in the retail petrol sector before the CNMC, the Supreme Court, and the European Commission, where he is securing victories for his client. In a recent representation of an electricity company, Raimundo obtained a favorable decision from the Spanish Energy Regulator that resulted in the amendment of regulation. In addition, he has experience in FDI limitations in the electricity market.
Raimundo teaches competition law and energy at a variety of academic institutions.
