Rob Johnson assists clients with problems involving complex facts and difficult legal issues. He has briefed and argued appeals in the federal Courts of Appeals, and he has argued dispositive motions in both state and federal courts. He also has experience building a factual record — including taking and defending depositions, examining witnesses at trial, and working with expert witnesses.

Rob has represented clients in cases raising a range of constitutional, statutory, and regulatory issues. He has represented companies and individuals targeted by government investigations, class action defendants opposing certification, employers contesting ERISA withdrawal liability, creditors seeking to collect from foreign governments, and plaintiffs challenging government regulations under the Administrative Procedure Act and the Constitution.

Prior to joining Jones Day, Rob clerked on the U.S. Supreme Court for Justice Anthony Kennedy and also worked on strategic impact litigation at a firm in Washington, D.C. He served as the lead attorney on cases challenging the constitutionality of state and federal laws. He briefed and argued a case that resulted in a decision striking down a civil forfeiture program as a violation of due process and was part of a trial team that won a First Amendment victory invalidating a licensing law.

Rob has testified before both houses of Congress regarding legal issues and has worked with legislative staffers on investigations and legislation. He also has experience working closely with communications professionals on cases with significant public relations dimensions.
