Mary Beth Deemer has handled high-profile civil and criminal environmental matters for more than 30 years. She has defended clients in grand jury investigations into alleged environmental crimes and in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) nationwide enforcement initiatives. Mary Beth also has handled matters involving all of the principal Pennsylvania and federal environmental statutes, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Bevill Amendment. She has extensive Superfund experience including precedent-setting Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) litigation and appeals to the Fourth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court. Mary Beth has represented clients at numerous sites in a variety of contexts, including unilateral administrative orders, government cost recovery actions, administrative settlements, and private cost recovery and contribution litigation. She heads the Environmental, Health & Safety Practice in the Pittsburgh Office.
For the last 20 years, Mary Beth has represented a large fertilizer manufacturer in a variety of environmental matters and has developed a deep understanding of the industry and its operations. Her recent representations include a federal grand jury investigation into alleged environmental wrongdoing at the client's Louisiana facility and a Superfund matter in which the government initially declined to pursue other liable parties. Mary Beth also represented a majority shareholder of a Florida company under civil and criminal investigation for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and RCRA. She currently is defending a fertilizer manufacturer in an EPA nationwide enforcement initiative alleging RCRA violations.
Mary Beth speaks and writes on environmental topics including the development of natural gas plays, sustainability, and corporate disclosure and shareholder activism related to climate change.
