Creation and defense of European champions: Asset in globalization, challenge for European competition policy?
Jones Day Brussels
Rue de la Régence 4
Jones Day hosted the inaugural seminar of "L’Entente", a recently created association of Brussels-based competition specialists (attorneys, in-house lawyers, economists, scholars, lobbyists…). L’Entente seeks to bring together French, French-speaking and Francophile competition specialists to discuss current competition issues and network in a friendly atmosphere.
The theme of this first seminar was the "Creation and defense of European champions: Asset in globalization, challenge for European competition policy?" This timely topic examined the ability of Europe to promote European economic champions in the global arena and the corresponding challenges raised in the field of competition law and policy (particularly under merger control and State aid rules).
Featured speakers included Eddy De Smijter (Head of the A5 Unit in charge of international relations at DG COMP) and Stéphane Dupuis (Competition and State Aid Advisor within the Permanent Representation of France to the EU). Also contributing to the debate were Pascal Belmin (Head of EU Regulatory Affairs, Airbus), Charlotte Breuvart (Partner, Jones Day) and Benoît Durand (Partner, RBB Economics).
