Washington, DC -- The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, through the State of Michigan's Local Emergency Financial Assistance Loan Board, has named Kevyn Orr, a partner in the Firm's Business Restructuring & Reorganization Practice, to serve as Emergency Financial Manager for the City of Detroit.

A University of Michigan graduate (J.D. 1983; B.A. in Political Science 1979), Mr. Orr has practiced in the areas of business restructuring, financial institution regulation, and commercial litigation for almost 30 years. He has played a leading role in many of the nation's highest profile business restructurings, including serving as counsel to Chrysler in its historic bankruptcy in 2009. Before entering private practice, he held several leadership positions in the U.S. Government related to financially distressed organizations, including serving as Director of the Executive Office for United States Trustees at the U.S. Department of Justice; Assistant General Counsel of the Complex Litigation and Bankruptcy Section, Resolution Trust Corporation; and Counsel, Litigation Section, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Mr. Orr also has held key leadership positions within Jones Day, one of the world's largest law firms. Among other things, Mr. Orr has served as head of Firmwide Recruiting and as the Chair of Jones Day's Diversity Task Force. At the beginning of this year, Mr. Orr was named the Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's new Miami Office.

"The Firm is very proud that Governor Snyder and the Emergency Board have asked our partner Kevyn Orr to serve as the Emergency Financial Manager of the City of Detroit," said Jones Day Managing Partner Steve Brogan. "Detroit is one of the greatest cities in the history of the country. Kevyn is a special and talented leader who possesses the empathy and the competence that will be needed to make, and then execute, the decisions required for the City of Detroit to find a sustainable path forward."

Mr. Orr has testified before the U.S. Congress on bankruptcy and financial institution regulation and is a frequent lecturer on these subjects at professional conferences and law schools. He is a member of the bars of Florida and the District of Columbia, the American Bar Association, and the American Bankruptcy Institute, where he serves on the law review advisory board. Mr. Orr has received outstanding service and performance awards from the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and Resolution Trust Corporation. As a private lawyer, he has been recognized multiple times as a leader in his field by Chambers USA and was named as one of "Washington's Best Legal Minds–Stars of the Bar — Bankruptcy" by Washingtonian magazine (December 2011) and as one of the "Best Attorneys in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore" for 2013 in Best Lawyers.
