Andrew Rankine is an accomplished patent litigator and has acted in many of Australia's leading intellectual property cases over the past decade. He assists clients in resolving complex IP disputes before Australia's Federal Court, the High Court of Australia, and the Australian Patent Office. Andrew is dual qualified in law and medicine and acts for leading multinationals in the pharmaceuticals, biotech, and medical device sectors. His clients also include global leaders in oil field services, chemicals, nuclear technology, water treatment, electronics, and fintech.

Prior to joining Jones Day in 2019, Andrew was successful in securing urgent interlocutory injunctive relief for pharmaceutical majors including Sanofi and Wyeth. He also acts in trade secrets, designs, and licensing disputes and has represented ResMed, Cochlear, Baxter Healthcare, BASF, Siemens, ANSTO, Samsung, and Petroleum Geo-Services. Andrew's appellate experience includes successfully representing Novozymes in patent litigation before Australia's Full Federal Court. He is regularly called upon to advise on patent validity, freedom to operate, amendments, term extensions, IP portfolio management, and litigation strategy. Andrew also advises on therapeutic goods regulation and Australia's Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

In addition to his legal qualifications Andrew holds degrees in biological science, medicine, and surgery. Before entering the legal profession Andrew practiced diagnostic pathology and undertook research in oncology and immunology.

Andrew is recommended by Doyle's Guide as a leading contentious intellectual property lawyer and recognized in Best Lawyers Australia for his life sciences practice. He is a member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA).
