Alex Zhang serves as coordinator of the China investments practice at Jones Day. He has experience in cross-border investments and corporate transactions, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital/private equity financing, Asia distressed assets transactions, corporate finance, international joint ventures, technology-related transactions, and China inward investments. Prior to joining Jones Day, Alex was chair of the Asia practice group and partner-in-charge of the Hong Kong and Shanghai offices of a major U.S.-based international law firm.
Alex has more than 16 years of experience representing multinational, U.S., European, Hong Kong, and Taiwanese investors as well as private equity funds and investment banks with their corporate transactions and investments in China. He has represented Chinese state-owned enterprises and other PRC and Hong Kong-based companies in their investments, acquisitions, and other corporate and commercial transactions and disputes in the U.S. and Europe. He has advised clients from a wide range of industries with their investments and operations in China such as telecommunication services and equipment, chemical products, paint and coating products, power generating equipment, food processing, real estate, computer software and equipment, wholesale and retail operations, construction, and hotel management. Alex also focuses on assisting and advising investment banks and private equity funds in structuring and negotiating share placement and acquisitions of China-based companies. In addition, he led a team of lawyers in completing a number of multimillion dollar nonperforming loan acquisitions from Chinese state-owned asset management companies on behalf of U.S. investors.
Alex is a frequent speaker on legal matters relating to China. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association. He is a native of Beijing and is fluent in Chinese and English and has lived and worked in the U.S., Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
