June 2010

Washington, D.C. – Jones Day is pleased to announce that Karen P. Hewitt, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California, will be joining as a partner in the Firm’s San Diego Office, where she will be part of Jones Day's Trial Practice.

Ms. Hewitt served as an attorney for the United States Department of Justice since 1992. From 1992 to 2000, Ms. Hewitt was assigned at Justice Department Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to the Civil Division, Constitutional and Specialized Torts Section, where she litigated hundreds of civil cases on behalf of the United States. In 2000, Ms. Hewitt returned home to San Diego to become an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Ms. Hewitt was selected by former United States Attorney Carol C. Lam in 2006 to serve as the third-in-command of the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego, and in 2007 was appointed as United States Attorney for the Southern District of California. During Ms. Hewitt’s tenure, she led a staff of approximately 275 employees and expanded criminal prosecutions in many areas, making San Diego the third-busiest U.S. Attorney's Office for felony prosecutions of the 94 U.S. Attorney's Offices throughout the nation.

"Karen is a widely respected attorney and has an impressive record of accomplishments as the top federal law enforcement attorney here in San Diego," said Anthony M. Insogna, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s San Diego Office. "Now that she has decided to move into private practice, we're pleased that she has selected Jones Day as the law firm where she will build the next phase of her career. Our clients in California and throughout the country as a whole will greatly benefit from Karen's government experience, her strong local ties in the community, and her intimate knowledge of federal law."

With Ms. Hewitt’s arrival, there are now 14 partners and a total of 34 legal professionals practicing in the Firm's San Diego Office.

A native of the San Diego area, Ms. Hewitt received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and her law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. Before joining the Justice Department, she was an attorney with the former San Diego law firm of McInnis, Fitzgerald, Rees, Sharkey and McIntyre.
