Tom Heyman, former head of the intellectual property law practice in the New York Office, has more than 40 years of experience in patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation. He has been lead counsel in actions brought in federal and state courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission. Tom has represented corporations across a wide range of technologies, including telecommunications, global positioning systems, digital cameras, televisions, radiology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and cosmetics. Companies Tom has represented include Alcatel-Lucent, Alza, BeautiControl, CSR, Dart Industries, DIRECTV, Eastman Kodak, Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex, Hand Held Products, Hoechst Marion Roussel, Oldelft, SiRF Technology, Standard Oil of Indiana, Tupperware, and VIZIO. In addition, he has extensive counseling experience in all aspects of intellectual property law practice, including validity and infringement opinions, and technology transfers, including the negotiation of patent, know-how, and trademark acquisitions and licenses.
Tom has written and lectured on patent and related antitrust issues. He was a founding member of the ITC Trial Lawyers Association, has served as its president, and is an ex officio member of its Executive Committee. Tom is chairman of the board of the First Department Assigned Counsel Corporation, which operates the Office of the Appellate Defender handling pro bono criminal appeals in the First Department and which has been nationally recognized as a pioneer in providing appellate legal services to indigent defendants. He also has served as a member of the board of visitors of Georgetown University Law Center.
