Transportation Product Liability Litigation - Overview

Jones Day's involvement in product liability litigation and our role in the development of modern class action jurisprudence can be traced to the early 1960s, such as our defense of General Motors in the Corvair litigation.  Since then, we have been actively involved in representing companies in the automobile and auto parts manufacturing, bus, trucking, rail, aviation and aerospace industries, as well as companies that design, manufacture, distribute or service components incorporated in those products.  Examples of our experience in these areas include:

  • Automotive and Component Parts Industries.   For decades, Jones Day attorneys, including Mickey Pohl (Pittsburgh), Jeff Jones (Columbus), David Monde (Atlanta), and Shawn Organ (Columbus), have defended clients in air bag, electronic control, engine fire, lemon law, seat belt, and wheel rim litigation, among others.
  • Rail Transportation Sector.   Jones Day has represented numerous clients in the rail transportation sector.  For example, Mickey Pohl (Pittsburgh), Chuck Moellenberg (Pittsburgh), Dan Reidy (Chicago), and June Ghezzi (Chicago) defended a subsidiary of General Electric in connection with a catastrophic crash involving Amtrak's "City of New Orleans" passenger train in Bourbonnais, Illinois.  And, Michael Gibson (Houston), for another example, has represented the Union Pacific Railroad in toxic tort personal injury claims alleging cancers caused by exposure to diesel exhaust.
  • Aviation Industry.   Jones Day represents several clients in the aviation industries.  Jones Day, including Tom Fennell (Dallas), John Goetz (Pittsburgh), Keith McDole (Dallas) and others, was retained to represent Parker Hannifin in the Silk Air Boeing 737 cases following a significant loss by predecessor counsel, and we are involved in a number of other Boeing 737 cases.  John Goetz (Pittsburgh), Paul Crist (Cleveland), and Dana Baiocco (Pittsburgh) also represent Parker Hannifin in general aviation aircraft accidents, and assisted in Parker's defense in a case involving Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan. Rich Bedell (Cleveland) and others represent Textron in aviation-related litigation, and David Monde  (Atlanta) has defended claims involving provision of airframe and engine parts and services.
