Rhys Thomas is a commercial litigator with broad experience in complex commercial litigation, arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution, with a particular focus on the technology sector. He has extensive experience in advising technology services companies in disputes arising from large-scale outsourcing projects, particularly in relation to government-sponsored projects including for the NHS, Ministry of Defence, Department of Work and Pensions, Ministry of Justice, and Transport for London. He has represented clients on several substantial software licensing disputes and has advised on high-profile data loss incidents, including public inquiries. In 2008, Rhys spent 12 months seconded to the EMEA legal team of a global technology services company.
Rhys also has substantial experience in contentious insolvency and fraud matters. He is currently advising Sibir Energy plc in connection with a $400m+ fraud perpetrated by its former directors. Past representations include acting for Izodia plc in relation to the theft of more than £30 million from its accounts and acting for parties in High Court litigation arising from the allegedly fraudulent procurement of export credit insurance cover worth more than £20 million (resulting in a six-week trial). Rhys has acted for banks, accountants, and corporations in insolvency proceedings and has advised insolvency practitioners on contentious insolvency matters in a variety of contexts, including most recently in the construction, property development, and logistics sectors.
