Jones Day is one of few firms with the experience to manage patent portfolios from a global perspective - our ability to represent companies across the globe provides our clients with both significant legal and competitive advantages, and is a principal source of the value we bring to our clients.
The Patent Prosecution group uses its global reach to build, protect, and manage assets for a wide range of companies. With more than 300 attorneys in our IP group serving clients on three continents, we are uniquely qualified to provide patent prosecution and counseling services from a global perspective.
While other general practice firms shun patent prosecution work, we embrace it and have an array of experienced patent attorneys that manage our clients' prosecution needs. Of the more than 300 patent attorneys in our IP group, more than 170 are registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, our patent prosecution group includes attorneys that have degrees in technical or scientific fields, and many previously worked in technical disciplines, including electrical and mechanical engineering, computer science, chemistry and chemical engineering, biotechnology, and genetics. Notable patent prosecution clients include Genentech, Celgene, Chevron, Research in Motion, Marvell Semiconductor, Micron Technologies, SAS Institute, Yamaha Motors, and BIC.
Jones Day is the only U.S. firm that directly does patent prosecution in the European Patent Office. Our full-service practice in Europe handles both self-standing European matters and the European side of multijurisdictional matters. Our capabilities and experience in patent prosecution, enforcement in the primary European jurisdictions (the U.K., Germany, and France), coordination of European-wide disputes, and licensing and transactions mean that Jones Day is well-placed to assist clients in negotiating the complex IP scene in Europe.
Navigating the rapidly emerging markets in Asia means coping with patent regulations that are in transition. Our IP lawyers in China assist clients in obtaining patents, avoiding infringement of other companies’ patents, licensing, and developing in-house strategies for long-term growth of patent portfolios. In addition, Jones Day Tokyo lawyers have the in-depth experience needed to work with clients to protect their patent rights in Japan.
