Jim Peterson has extensive experience creating and implementing strategy for procuring, licensing, and enforcing clients' intellectual property portfolios on a global basis. Jim's diverse technical practice includes computer technology, semiconductor manufacture, electrical interconnection, and material science applied to medical products, renewable energy, and energy storage. As co-chair of Jones Day's Emerging Technologies practice, Jim concentrates in nanotechnology and clean technology.

Before joining Jones Day in 2005, Jim established the Silicon Valley office of Burns Doane where he was a partner for 18 years and chaired the mechanical practice group. Earlier in his career, he held the position of in-house senior counsel at both Raychem Corporation and Hercules Incorporated.

Jim has guest lectured on intellectual property law subjects at meetings of the Industrial Design Society of America, the International Conference on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies, the International Conference on Martensitic Transformation, the Nanotech Investing Forum, and other professional societies and technical groups. He is a member of the following professional organizations: American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Licensing Executives Society, Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association, San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, and San Mateo County Bar Association.
