Jones Day urges NALP to reject proposed changes to on-campus recruiting
January 2010
Jones Day has submitted comments to a January 7, 2010 report published by the National Association for Law Placement's Commission on Recruiting in the Legal Profession, which contains a variety of recommendations for changes to law student recruiting. The Firm has urged the NALP to reject the Commission's proposals.
As one of the largest employers of new law graduates in the country, Jones Day believes there are serious issues as to the necessity, propriety and legality of NALP's proposed modifications to the recruiting process, which would, among other things, prohibit all law firms from making offers to second year students until the January after on campus interviews were conducted. Far from improving the process, the Commission’s proposals would impermissibly alter the competitive market for the hiring of law students and would constrain students’ ability to reach early employment decisions that they individually judged to be in their best interests. It would also adversely affect the ability of law firms to make recruiting and hiring decisions in their own individual interests.
