Jones Day named to the Fearsome Five for 6th consecutive year in BTI's new Litigation Outlook report

September 2017

The global law firm Jones Day has been ranked among the "Fearsome Five" (formerly the "Fearsome Foursome") − the law firms that clients would least like to see as opposing counsel − for the sixth consecutive time according to the BTI Litigation Outlook 2018 report, published this month by the BTI Consulting Group, Inc.

For the second consecutive year, Jones Day was named in all eight "Litigation Powerhouse" rankings (highest category rating), which include class action litigation, complex commercial litigation, everyday commercial litigation, complex employment litigation, everyday employment litigation, IP litigation, securities and finance litigation, and product liability litigation. Only three law firms earned this distinction.

"Through formidable talent across specialties and jurisdictions we seamlessly collaborate to serve clients across a wide range of bet-the-company matters. Through shared professional values we protect our clients from multiple adversaries all over the world, in hostile and sometimes even threatening environments," said Glen Nager, Jones Day’s Client Affairs Partner. "From complex commercial litigation to multidistrict litigation and class actions, from international arbitration to overreaching regulation, we work as a cohesive partnership to defend and advance the interests of our clients, from counseling through trial and appeal."

To identify the 2018 "Fearsome Five," BTI conducted interviews between February and July 2017, asking 350 general counsel and in-house litigation heads which law firms they would least like to see on the other side of the table. The majority, unaided, named Jones Day and the other four firms on the list.

"Clients report Jones Day is at the pinnacle of litigation performance – being the only firm ranked as a Litigation Powerhouse in each of the 8 major categories of Litigation for 2 years in a row," said Michael B. Rynowecer, President of The BTI Consulting Group.  "Top legal officers report Jones Day brings strength, savvy and client focus while being one of the rare firms instilling fear in the other side."

BTI bases the analysis of current and future trends in litigation provided in the 2018 Litigation Outlook report on more than 4,800 interviews with corporate counsel and other legal decision makers in the span of 18 years.

Jones Day was recently top-ranked in four major BTI reports which included:
