Jones Day named an "Appellate Group of the Year" by Law360

January 2011

Jones Day has been named as having one of the five leading appellate practices of 2010 by publisher Law360.

Firms receiving this honor were selected by a committee of Law 360 editors that reviewed more than 400 submissions.  Winners were selected based on the number of important wins in the appellate practice area.

Law360 noted a number of the Firm's cases, including the following:

Jones Day represented head wear maker American Needle against the NFL and the solicitor general to win a high court ruling that the NFL can be scrutinized under antitrust laws, a ruling that overturned the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit's decision in the case.

Jones Day represented the Free Enterprise Fund and Beckstead and Watts, LLP to win a high court ruling invalidating a key provision of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.  The Supreme Court concluded that the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board violated the separation of powers clause by immunizing its board members from presidential oversight and control.

The Firm also represented former Alaska State representative Bruce Wyehrauch, who was accused of committing federal fraud for failing to disclose a purported conflict of interest.  The Supreme Court ruled that the "honest services fraud" statute was unconstitutionally vague, precluding the federal government from prosecuting Weyhrauch under its proposed nondisclosure theory.

The Firm successfully defended Chevron in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in a highly publicized Nigerian human rights case brought under the Alien Tort Statute.

Jones Day successfully represented JPMorgan Chase in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, awarding it $356 million for damages in "Winstar" cases arising from the 1980's saving & loan crisis.

Jones Day's more than 50 Issues & Appeals lawyers are recognized and able advocates, including over 20 former U.S. Supreme Court law clerks, and more than 50 former federal appellate law clerks who have honed the art of advocacy through dozens of arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court and countless appearances before appellate and trial courts nationwide. In the words of Chambers USA, the practice "has a vast quantity of esteemed attorneys" who are "'masters of appellate advocacy,'" "'take complicated matters and distill them into clear language,'" and are "'able to absorb the facts of a case in ultra-quick time.'"
