Greg Shumaker, Firm Hiring Partner

A Message From the Firm Hiring Partner:

Some of you who are reading the materials on this web site are the future leaders of Jones Day. One day you will shape our 22 practice areas and run our offices around the world. You will be the lead trial lawyers in important, high-profile cases. You will head teams negotiating cross-border transactions. You will develop patent strategies for your clients and then design creative ways to implement and enforce them. And you will train young lawyers and work with them to defend people on death row, win asylum for immigrants, and secure appropriate public education for children with disabilities.

I thought you might want to know something about the kind of people you'll be working alongside, and the kind of place this is.

Your colleagues will be smart, highly motivated, and creative. They will have succeeded at the Firm along different paths. Some will have been engineers or teachers before becoming lawyers. Some will have been judicial clerks or will have served a term in government. Some will have worked part-time while raising children. Many of your colleagues will practice with you for your entire career and will be among your closest friends. All will share a dedication to our clients' interests and a desire to work together as a team in a way that distinguishes us from others in the profession. As The American Lawyer once wrote about our lawyers, they "avoid flashiness and self-promotion" and have "an all-for-one, one-for-all mentality that discourages ego and parochialism."

You will be a leader in a law firm that is itself a leader in the global expansion of legal services and has one of the most enviable client bases in the world. Over the years, these clients will have sought your counsel on a variety of problems and opportunities far more diverse and complex than anything you could have imagined in law school. You will remember the first time that you experienced firsthand the breadth and depth of this Firm's resources when a team of your colleagues from a half-dozen offices assembled on a moment's notice to help you fend off a hostile takeover, obtain a temporary restraining order, or conduct an internal investigation. Perhaps most important, you will have come to appreciate the true meaning of "One Firm Worldwide." You will know that it isn't just a slogan; you will recognize that it refers to a true unity of purpose among our lawyers, which places the welfare of our clients and the Firm above that of any practice, region, office, or individual. You'll know that it's the defining principle for what makes it a pleasure and a privilege to practice here.

We're looking forward to meeting you on campus and in our offices, and getting to know the next generation of our leaders.
