Brian McDonald is a policyholder coverage litigator who also advises on and litigates complex commercial matters. He has counseled clients in numerous major coverage actions and has helped clients secure hundreds of millions of dollars in insurance recoveries for extraordinary losses. He has experience representing and counseling policyholders in insurance recovery matters relating to a broad array of insurance lines, including commercial general liability, umbrella, excess, errors and omissions, directors and officers, first-party property and business interruption (including with respect to Hurricane Katrina-related losses), and environmental insurance.

Brian has represented policyholders in litigation and negotiations on a broad range of insurance claims, including coverage for asbestos bodily injury and other toxic tort claims, product liability claims, environmental hazards, property damage claims, and employer liability claims. He also counsels clients on alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and risk management issues and negotiates the design and purchase of insurance programs for clients.

Before joining Jones Day in 2008, Brian practiced in the litigation department of an international law firm in San Francisco where his practice also focused on insurance recovery and complex commercial litigation.

Brian has been a Fellow of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology since 2002. He also is a former law clerk to the Honorable Margaret Morrow in the Central District of California. Brian is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of California, and the Bar Association of San Francisco.
